JobsFirstNYC is proud to announce that as part of our local initiative – the Young Adult Sectoral Employment Project (YASEP) – four workforce partnerships have been awarded planning grants and will join the YASEP Learning Community. Each partnership will receive a $50,000 grant to plan programs, using a sectoral approach, to improve employment outcomes for young adults, who are out-of-school and out-of-work, and may not be ready for college at this time.
As part of our mission to help young New Yorkers connect to stable jobs and career opportunities, JobsFirstNYC launched YASEP in 2013. YASEP represents an attempt to harness the power of sectoral employment strategies – programs that focus on filling the hiring needs of employers within one industry or set of occupations on behalf of out-of-school, out-of-work 18- to 24-year-old New Yorkers.Late 2015, JobsFirstNYC put a call out to the field to create sector-based partnerships with capacity and experience to serve young adults and with employer ties. The response was impressive. JobsFirstNYC received outstanding applications reflecting a field-wide interest in sectoral-approach learning and cross-organizational collaboration to better serve New York City’s young adult population.
The four partnerships selected are: |

Speaking about the YASEP initiative from the employers’ perspective Greg Hambric, Regional Recruiter, Modell’s Sporting Goods, and JobsFirstNYC board member stated, “Representing a leading employer of younger workers in the retail sector in New York City and beyond, I can share from direct experience that sector strategies, effectively developed and implemented, have had a direct and positive impact on how our business engages with the workforce development field, and as workforce organizations learn to be more responsive to our changing needs, young people’s chances of becoming economically secure will continue to improve.”
As one of the funders that supports YASEP, Laurie Dien, Vice President of Programs at The Pinkerton Foundation said, “Engaging employers through sectoral strategies has been one of the most important developments in the youth employment field in many years. This is a win-win for everyone. It enables institutions that serve young adults to work smarter and gives employers access to more productive employees.” |
The Young Adult Sectoral Employment Project is made possible with the generous support of the following funders: the Annie E. Casey Foundation, The Achelis Foundation, The Aronson Family Foundation, Capital One Foundation, The Clark Foundation, Ira W. DeCamp Foundation, JPMorgan Chase Foundation, Mizuho USA Foundation, The New York Community Trust, and The Pinkerton Foundation. |
